⚠️ Leave the Vape on the Ship.⚠️
As of January 16, 2026, Mexico's updated federal health law prohibits the production, importation, exportation, sale, distribution and commercial supply of vapes, e-cigarettes and similar electronic smoking devices.
If your cruise is stopping in Cozumel, Costa Maya or another Mexican port, the safest choice is simple: do not take your vape off the ship.
This includes:
Disposable vapes
Rechargeable vaping devices
E-cigarettes
Vape pods and cartridges
E-liquids, including products containing nicotine
Similar electronic smoking devices
⚠️ Fines & Penalties ⚠️
Mexico is taking violations involving prohibited vape activities seriously. Under the 2026 law, prohibited commercial activities involving these products can carry:
💰 Fines: 100–2,000 times Mexico's daily UMA, which was approximately 11,000–226,000 Mexican pesos when the legislation was approved.
🚔 Prison: Certain prohibited activities involving the production, importation, exportation, distribution, sale or supply of these products can carry 1–8 years in prison and fines equivalent to roughly $12,000 to $14,000 USD (up to 226,280 Mexican pesos).
🗑️ Confiscation: Mexican health and customs authorities have enforcement powers regarding prohibited vaping products, so travelers should be prepared for a device or related products to be seized or confiscated if authorities determine they violate Mexican law.
Important Personal-Use Distinction
The law does not mean that a cruise passenger caught personally using or possessing a single vape automatically faces an eight-year prison sentence. Mexican lawmakers specifically stated that individual consumers are not the intended target of the criminal penalties when the products are not connected with commercialization, distribution or profit.
However, bringing a vape into Mexico can create an unnecessary problem at a port of entry, particularly because importation itself is among the activities prohibited by the law.
🚫 Don't Vape Just Anywhere
Mexico also has extensive smoke-free regulations. Smoking and vaping are restricted in many public areas, including places tourists commonly visit such as:
Beaches
Restaurants and terraces
Bars
Parks and public gathering areas
Hotels and other hospitality areas
Entertainment venues
Only use designated smoking areas where permitted.
🛳️ Cruise Passenger Tip
Going ashore in Mexico? Leave the vape in your cabin.
Don't assume that because you were allowed to bring it aboard your cruise ship that you're allowed to carry it into Mexico. Cruise-line rules and Mexican law are two different things.
For stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya, enjoy your day ashore without it and wait until you're back onboard to use your device only in your ship's designated smoking/vaping areas.
⚠️ DON'T RISK YOUR VACATION
A vape isn't worth having your device confiscated, being questioned by authorities, receiving a fine or potentially facing more serious legal consequences.
When in doubt—leave it on the ship!
Cozumel has three primary cruise terminals:
📍 Punta Langosta
Located closest to downtown San Miguel. Shopping, restaurants and the waterfront are easily accessible from here.
📍 International Pier / SSA
Located south of downtown. You'll generally want a taxi if you're heading into San Miguel.
📍 Puerta Maya
Also south of downtown and home to a large cruise-terminal complex filled with shops, restaurants and bars.
You don't necessarily need an excursion to enjoy your day.
Around the cruise areas you'll find:

- Jewelry and duty-free shopping
- Pharmacies
- Taxis
- Tour operators
- Photo opportunities
- Tequila and Mexican specialty shops
JoJo Tip: Always double-check which terminal your ship is using before making independent plans. Cozumel's terminals are not all in the same location.
Cozumel has something for every kind of port day—from beautiful beaches and incredible reefs to island adventures, local culture and downtown exploring. Here are a few spots worth checking out!
If you want a little bit of everything in one location, Chankanaab is one of Cozumel’s classic cruise-day choices.
Located within the Cozumel National Reef Marine Park area, Chankanaab offers access to clear Caribbean water, snorkeling, beach areas and several additional activities.
Depending on the experience you purchase, you may find:
- Snorkeling
- Swimming
- Beach areas
- Sea Trek
- SNUBA
- Animal encounters
- Cultural attractions
- Restaurants and drinks
- Hammocks and lounging areas
It's especially convenient for families or groups where everyone wants to do something a little different.
Want beautiful scenery with a more natural feel?
Punta Sur is Cozumel’s largest ecological reserve and one of my favorite choices for travelers who want scenery, wildlife and beach time rolled into one experience.
You can find:
- Beautiful white-sand beaches
- The historic Celarain Lighthouse
- Lagoon boat rides
- Wildlife viewing
- Crocodile observation areas
- Nature trails
- Hammocks and beach chairs
- Gorgeous photo opportunities
The views from the lighthouse alone make this one worth considering.
You don’t have to leave Cozumel to experience Maya history.
San Gervasio is the island’s most important archaeological site and was once an important Maya religious, commercial and political center associated with the goddess Ixchel.
This is a great choice if you:
- Love history
- Want something other than a beach day
- Prefer a shorter archaeological excursion without traveling to the mainland
- Want to learn more about Cozumel before modern tourism arrived.
Just remember: this is a tropical archaeological site, so bring comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen and bug spray.
If you've seen photos of unbelievably clear, shallow turquoise water with starfish resting on the sandy bottom, there's a good chance you were looking at El Cielo.
El Cielo is reached by boat and is commonly combined with snorkeling stops around Palancar and Columbia reefs. Depending on conditions, you may encounter tropical fish, rays, turtles and starfish.

- Anyone chasing that incredible Caribbean-water photo
Want something easier?
Spend a few hours wandering around San Miguel de Cozumel.
Explore:

- The town square
Guests docking at Punta Langosta have especially convenient access to downtown.
Because Sitting Still All Day Isn't for Everybody!
Cozumel is one of those ports where you could come back several times and have a completely different experience.
If you're my kind of traveler and want a little excitement, consider:
Drive around the island, explore the coastline and combine your tour with beaches, Punta Sur, snorkeling or local stops.
Get dirty!
ATV excursions may take you through jungle trails, rugged terrain and areas away from the traditional tourist zone.
A fun alternative to a Jeep with plenty of island scenery and wind in your face.
Cozumel is one of the Caribbean's best-known reef destinations. Palancar and Columbia are frequently included on boat tours.
Some excursions search for sea turtles and other marine life while exploring Cozumel's waters.
Drive or ride aboard a small speedboat before combining the experience with snorkeling or beach time.

Never scuba dived before?
Beginner introductory experiences may be available with certified instructors, while experienced certified divers can explore Cozumel's famous reefs.

A submarine excursion offers another way to experience Cozumel's underwater world.
Perfect when you want activity without going full adrenaline.

Cozumel has numerous beach clubs where you can spend the day swimming, eating, drinking and relaxing.
Depending on the property, you may find:
- Beach chairs
- Umbrellas
- Pools
- Restaurants
- Open-bar packages
- Inflatable water parks
- Kayaks
- Paddleboards
- Snorkeling
- Jet skis or other motorized activities
- Massages
Some beach clubs require reservations or sell out when several cruise ships are visiting, so planning ahead is smart.

Please don't come all the way to Mexico and only eat something you could get back home!
Pork shaved straight from a vertical spit onto small, soft corn tortillas.

A Yucatán specialty. pork marinated in achiote and citrus, wrapped in banana leaves, and slow-roasted until tender.

⚠️ Tequila Tasting Tip
You'll see plenty of tequila tastings and tequila shops.
Enjoy them—but don't feel pressured into buying an expensive bottle.
Ask:
"How much is this bottle?"
before agreeing to purchase.
And remember...those little samples can add up quickly!

A vivid blue, highly refreshing beach cocktail served at local surf and shore spots on the rugged east side
Tequila’s smoky counterpart, which has grown tremendously in domestic popularity, traditionally sipped neat with orange slices and worm salt.
Crafted at Destilería Cozumel, the island's local distillery, featuring unique creations like grilled pineapple rum mixers.
When eating ashore:
- Choose reputable restaurants and excursion partners.
- Drink sealed bottled water when you're unsure of the source.
- Make sure bottles arrive sealed.
- Ask about ice if you're concerned.
- Wash or sanitize your hands before eating.
- Keep hydrated—especially if alcohol is involved.
Taxis are widely used by cruise visitors for transportation between the terminals, downtown, attractions and beach clubs.
Before Getting In:
Ask the fare first.
"How much to ______?"
Agree to the price before the taxi leaves.
Cash is useful, and paying in Mexican pesos can avoid unfavorable exchange-rate conversions when fares are quoted or paid in U.S. dollars.

Take a photo of the taxi number or identifying information if you're traveling independently.
Cozumel is a major tourism destination, but normal cruise-port awareness still applies.

💵 Unclear Prices
Ask before ordering, buying or agreeing to a service.
🍹 Overdoing the Alcohol
The Mexican sun + margaritas + snorkeling is not a winning combination.
⏰ Losing Track of Ship Time
Your ship will not wait because you found the world's best taco.
🚕 Taxi Confusion
Confirm the destination and fare before leaving.
💳 Currency Conversions
If paying by card, review the amount and currency before approving the transaction.
🛍️ High-Pressure Sales
It's perfectly fine to say:
"No, gracias."
and keep walking.
🌊 Ocean Conditions
Currents and waves can change quickly. Follow local guides and posted warnings.
☀️ Caribbean Sun
It is stronger than it feels. Use sunscreen and hydrate.
Please help protect them.
DO:
- Follow your guide's instructions
- Keep your distance from coral
- Leave shells and marine life where you found them
- Use reef-conscious sun protection when required by your operator or park
- Observe wildlife without disturbing it
DON'T:
- Stand on coral
- Break coral
- Take coral home
- Pick up starfish for photos
- Chase or grab turtles
- Feed wildlife unless specifically permitted by an authorized program
Much of Cozumel's reef environment is protected, and visitors should treat it like the natural treasure it is.
- Bring your ship card and government-issued identification if required.
- Carry some small bills or pesos.
- Confirm taxi prices before getting in.
- Try local food.
- Book reputable excursion operators.
- Bring sunscreen.
- Bring a hat and sunglasses.
- Take plenty of pictures.
- Respect marine life.
- Know your ship's all-aboard time.
- Allow extra time to return to the port.
- Have FUN!
- Bring your vape ashore.
- Flash large amounts of cash.
- Leave valuables unattended at the beach.
- Touch coral or marine animals.
- Pick up starfish.
- Drink so much that you lose track of time.
- Assume every price is in U.S. dollars.
- Get into a taxi without confirming the price.
- Wait until the last minute to return to your ship.
- Forget that ship time and local time may not always be the same.
A small cruise-day bag should include:

- Towel if needed

Closed-toe shoes + clothes you don't mind getting dirty!
Seriously.
You may come back looking like you rolled through half of Mexico.

If you're exploring on your own, I personally recommend planning to be back near the cruise terminal well before all-aboard time.
Traffic, weather, tour delays and transportation problems can happen.
A cruise-line excursion offers additional protections when delays occur, while independent guests are responsible for returning to the ship on time.
Whether you're snorkeling above a Caribbean reef, racing along an island trail, exploring Punta Sur, wandering through downtown, eating tacos by the water or doing absolutely nothing except enjoying a margarita from your beach chair...
