Welcome to Roatán, a lush Caribbean island sitting just off the northern coast of Honduras. Famous for its crystal-clear water, colorful coral reefs, white-sand beaches, tropical wildlife and laid-back island atmosphere, Roatán is the kind of cruise port where you’ll want to get out and explore.
The island lies along the Mesoamerican Reef, which stretches more than 1,000 kilometers from Mexico through Belize and Guatemala to the Bay Islands of Honduras. That makes snorkeling and diving some of the biggest attractions here.
Whether your perfect day means holding a sloth, flying through the jungle on a zipline, snorkeling above coral gardens, relaxing at West Bay Beach or eating fresh seafood with your toes in the sand, Roatán can easily become one of your favorite stops of the cruise.
⚠️ Leave the Vape on the Ship.⚠️
As of January 16, 2026, Mexico's updated federal health law prohibits the production, importation, exportation, sale, distribution and commercial supply of vapes, e-cigarettes and similar electronic smoking devices.
If your cruise is stopping in Cozumel, Costa Maya or another Mexican port, the safest choice is simple: do not take your vape off the ship.
This includes:
Disposable vapes
Rechargeable vaping devices
E-cigarettes
Vape pods and cartridges
E-liquids, including products containing nicotine
Similar electronic smoking devices
⚠️ Fines & Penalties ⚠️
Mexico is taking violations involving prohibited vape activities seriously. Under the 2026 law, prohibited commercial activities involving these products can carry:
💰 Fines: 100–2,000 times Mexico's daily UMA, which was approximately 11,000–226,000 Mexican pesos when the legislation was approved.
🚔 Prison: Certain prohibited activities involving the production, importation, exportation, distribution, sale or supply of these products can carry 1–8 years in prison and fines equivalent to roughly $12,000 to $14,000 USD (up to 226,280 Mexican pesos).
🗑️ Confiscation: Mexican health and customs authorities have enforcement powers regarding prohibited vaping products, so travelers should be prepared for a device or related products to be seized or confiscated if authorities determine they violate Mexican law.
Important Personal-Use Distinction
The law does not mean that a cruise passenger caught personally using or possessing a single vape automatically faces an eight-year prison sentence. Mexican lawmakers specifically stated that individual consumers are not the intended target of the criminal penalties when the products are not connected with commercialization, distribution or profit.
However, bringing a vape into Mexico can create an unnecessary problem at a port of entry, particularly because importation itself is among the activities prohibited by the law.
🚫 Don't Vape Just Anywhere
Mexico also has extensive smoke-free regulations. Smoking and vaping are restricted in many public areas, including places tourists commonly visit such as:
Beaches
Restaurants and terraces
Bars
Parks and public gathering areas
Hotels and other hospitality areas
Entertainment venues
Only use designated smoking areas where permitted.
🛳️ Cruise Passenger Tip
Going ashore in Mexico? Leave the vape in your cabin.
Don't assume that because you were allowed to bring it aboard your cruise ship that you're allowed to carry it into Mexico. Cruise-line rules and Mexican law are two different things.
For stops in Cozumel and Costa Maya, enjoy your day ashore without it and wait until you're back onboard to use your device only in your ship's designated smoking/vaping areas.
⚠️ DON'T RISK YOUR VACATION
A vape isn't worth having your device confiscated, being questioned by authorities, receiving a fine or potentially facing more serious legal consequences.
When in doubt—leave it on the ship!
Port of Roatán – Coxen Hole
This is the port used by many cruise lines, including MSC Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Norwegian. It is located in Coxen Hole, the island's main town. Inside and around the cruise center you'll find shopping, souvenirs, food, drinks and transportation or tour operators.
DreamCrafters Tip: If you're sailing MSC World America, this is the port you should generally expect to use. Always check your final itinerary because port assignments can change.
Mahogany Bay / Isla Tropicale
The island's other major cruise facility is used primarily by Carnival Corporation cruise lines. It has its own beach area and is known for the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a chairlift that carries guests from the cruise center toward the beach.
Important: Don't read directions for “Mahogany Bay” and assume they apply to your ship. The two cruise centers are in different locations.
From picture-perfect beaches and laid-back island villages to tropical wildlife and one of the Caribbean’s most incredible reef systems, Roatán is made for exploring. Whether you want to relax, snorkel, meet a sloth or experience a little local island life, there’s something here for everyone.
If you're dreaming of that postcard-perfect Caribbean beach day, West Bay should be high on your list.
Expect gorgeous turquoise water, soft sand, resorts, beach bars, restaurants and excellent access to snorkeling.
It's perfect for:
West Bay can become busy when several ships are in port, so heading there earlier in the day is usually the better choice.
For more of a local island-town atmosphere, head to West End.
You'll find waterfront restaurants, bars, dive shops, small stores and Half Moon Bay, all wrapped into a laid-back Caribbean setting.
West End is a great choice if you want to wander around, grab some food, have a drink and experience more of Roatán beyond a traditional beach resort.
One of Roatán's popular nature attractions, Gumbalimba Park combines tropical gardens, wildlife, history and beach surroundings.
Visitors can encounter animals including white-faced capuchin monkeys, scarlet macaws and iguanas while exploring the park.
This is an especially fun choice for families or anyone looking for a little nature mixed into their island day.
Yes—the famous Roatán sloths!
Wildlife encounters are among the most requested excursions on the island and are often combined with other activities such as:
Sloths + Monkeys + Beach
Sloths + Snorkeling
Sloths + Ziplining
Sloths + Island Tour
Sloths + Chocolate & Rum Tastings
If interacting with wildlife is important to you, choose an established facility and follow its animal-handling rules rather than approaching wildlife independently.
Roatán is a fantastic destination for anyone who loves being in the water.
The Bay Islands sit along the southern portion of the Mesoamerican Reef system, and Roatán Marine Park helps protect important reef areas around the island.
Snorkel or dive and you may encounter colorful tropical fish, coral formations and other Caribbean marine life.
Please help protect it: Never stand on, kick, collect or touch coral.
One island. One port day. So many ways to explore.
One of Roatán’s most popular wildlife experiences! Visit a local sanctuary to see sloths, capuchin and spider monkeys, scarlet macaws, parrots and other tropical animals up close while learning about their care and behavior.
Popular locations include Daniel Johnson’s Monkey & Sloth Hangout, AJ’s Monkeys & Sloths and Victor’s Monkey & Sloth Sanctuary. Many tours can also be combined with snorkeling, West Bay Beach, an island tour or an iguana encounter.
Important: Wildlife experiences have moved toward no-contact encounters, so don’t assume you’ll be able to hold or touch the animals. You can still enjoy close-up viewing and plenty of great photo opportunities.
Escape to West Bay Beach, one of Roatán’s most beautiful stretches of white sand and turquoise Caribbean water. Most beach-break excursions include round-trip transportation from the cruise port, resort or beach-club access, a lounge chair, restrooms, showers and other amenities.
Some packages also offer lunch, drinks, snorkeling or all-inclusive options. With the Mesoamerican Reef just offshore, West Bay is also a fantastic spot to add snorkeling to your beach day.
DreamCrafters Tip: Amenities vary by resort and excursion, so check exactly what your beach pass includes before booking.
Dive into Roatán’s crystal-clear Caribbean waters and discover the incredible Mesoamerican Reef, one of the largest barrier reef systems in the world. Snorkeling excursions may take you by boat or directly from shore to explore colorful coral gardens, tropical fish and other marine life.

Excursions are available for certified divers, while some operators may offer introductory or discovery dives for beginners. Packages typically include professional dive guides, equipment and transportation to the dive site, depending on the tour.
DreamCrafters Tip: Check certification, age and medical requirements before booking, and always make sure your dive schedule allows plenty of time before returning to the ship.
Soar above Roatán’s lush tropical landscape on an exciting zipline adventure through the island’s jungle canopy! Fly from platform to platform while taking in beautiful views of the surrounding greenery and Caribbean scenery.
Zipline excursions range from beginner-friendly courses to more adventurous routes and are often combined with sloth and monkey encounters, island sightseeing or a relaxing beach break.
DreamCrafters Tip: Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing, secure loose belongings, and check the tour’s age, height and weight requirements before booking.
Explore Roatán your way with a private island tour designed around your group and interests. With your own driver or guide, you can experience several of the island’s highlights without being tied to a large tour group or rigid itinerary.
Popular stops can include scenic overlooks, West End, West Bay Beach, sloth and monkey sanctuaries, chocolate and rum tastings, local shopping and cultural attractions. Depending on the tour, you may even add snorkeling, ziplining or beach time.
DreamCrafters Tip: A private tour is one of the best choices if you want to experience a little bit of everything in one port day. Confirm your itinerary, what's included and your return-to-ship time with your operator before heading out.
Consider:
Scenic Stops + Sloths + Chocolate Factory + Rum Tasting + West Bay Beach
Set sail along Roatán’s beautiful Caribbean coastline aboard a catamaran, combining relaxing time on the water with an unforgettable snorkeling adventure. Cruise to a reef location where you can jump into the clear turquoise water and explore colorful coral, tropical fish and other marine life.
Depending on the excursion, your day may also include snorkel equipment, music, refreshments, tropical drinks, snacks or lunch, with plenty of time to relax onboard and enjoy the island views.
DreamCrafters Tip: Bring sunscreen, a towel and a waterproof phone case—and check whether food, drinks and snorkeling gear are included before booking.
Discover a quieter, more authentic side of Roatán as you explore the island’s mangrove waterways, coastal communities and beautiful Caribbean scenery. These tours offer a chance to get beyond the beaches and learn more about Roatán’s natural environment, history and local way of life.
Depending on the excursion, you may travel by boat through mangrove tunnels, visit traditional fishing villages, explore the island’s east end and stop at scenic viewpoints or local attractions along the way.
DreamCrafters Tip: This is a great choice for travelers looking for culture, nature and scenery without a high-adrenaline adventure. Bring insect repellent, sun protection and your camera—you’ll see a completely different side of Roatán.
Saddle up and experience Roatán from a different point of view on a guided horseback riding adventure through the island’s tropical scenery. Depending on the excursion, your ride may take you along jungle trails, coastal paths and beautiful Caribbean beaches, with some tours even allowing the horses to walk into the shallow water.
Many horseback riding excursions can be combined with beach time, wildlife encounters or island sightseeing, making it easy to turn your ride into a full Roatán adventure.
DreamCrafters Tip: Wear comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes, and check the excursion’s age, height and weight requirements before booking.
Located in West Bay, Gumbalimba Park is a 20-acre beachfront nature reserve, wildlife sanctuary and eco-adventure park surrounded by lush tropical scenery. Visit the Pirate Cave and insectarium, cool off in the freshwater pool or spend some time relaxing along the beach. For more adventure, you can even add ziplining through the tropical canopy—making Gumbalimba Park a great choice for families, animal lovers and adventure seekers.
Don't leave Roatán without trying some local Honduran and Caribbean flavors.
A traditional Garifuna dish, it consists of a rich, savory fish stew cooked in a freshly squeezed coconut milk broth, served alongside a large, comforting mound of pounded and mashed green and ripe plantains, often served with seafood.
If you want to taste something connected to the region's Garifuna heritage, this is one to look for.
One of Honduras' best-known comfort foods.
A warm flour tortilla is traditionally folded around refried beans, cheese and crema, with variations adding eggs, avocado, meat or other fillings.
Simple, filling and delicious.
You're on an island—take advantage of it!
Look for freshly prepared fish that is grilled, fried or served Caribbean-style with rice, beans, plantains or vegetables.
Depending on the restaurant and availability, menus may feature shrimp, lobster, conch and other seafood.
Sweet or savory, plantains are a staple side you'll see throughout Honduras.
Coconut milk appears throughout Caribbean coastal cooking and pairs beautifully with rice, beans, seafood and soups.
Drink bottled or properly treated water when you're unsure of the source.
If you stop at Sundowners Beach Bar in West End, keep an eye out for the famous Zack Attack—a refreshing frozen island favorite made with vodka or white rum, sour mix and coconut cream. The combination creates a sweet-and-tangy tropical flavor often compared to key lime pie in a glass.
DreamCrafters Tip: Enjoy one while taking in the waterfront views—it’s a fun way to get a taste of West End’s laid-back island vibe!
Often called “dessert in a glass,” the Monkey Lala is one of Roatán’s signature frozen cocktails. This rich island favorite typically blends rum, vodka, Kahlúa, Baileys and coconut cream, often finished with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Some versions even add fresh banana.
The drink gets its fun name from Roatán’s basilisk lizard, locally nicknamed the “Monkey Lala,” which is famous for running across the surface of the water.
DreamCrafters Tip: Don’t let the sweet, creamy flavor fool you—this tropical treat can pack a punch! 🍹🌴
If a cold beer sounds perfect for your beach day, try one of Honduras’ popular local brews. SalvaVida (“Lifesaver”) is a light, easy-drinking lager and an island favorite, while Port Royal offers a crisp pilsner-style option. You may also find Imperial and Barena at bars and restaurants around Roatán.
DreamCrafters Tip: Order one ice-cold with fresh seafood or a plate of baleadas for a little taste of Honduras!
Add a little island flavor to your Roatán day with a tasting of locally inspired and infused rums. At popular stops such as the Roatán Rum Company, you may find tropical flavors like coconut and mango, along with richer varieties such as espresso rum.
Don't forget about the Caribbean rum cake—another favorite treat made with rum and a popular souvenir to bring home.
DreamCrafters Tip: Rum tastings are an easy and fun addition to a private island tour, especially when paired with chocolate tasting, sightseeing and a beach stop!
For something brewed right on the island, check out Roatán Island Brewing Co. in Palmetto Bay. This local brewery serves a variety of small-batch craft beers, including favorites like Palapa Pale Ale, with tropical fruit notes, and the crisp, refreshing Roatán Blonde Ale.
DreamCrafters Tip: A brewery stop is a fun addition to an island tour—especially for craft beer lovers looking to taste something truly local!
The official currency of Honduras is the Honduran lempira, but U.S. dollars are commonly accepted in many tourism-focused businesses on Roatán.
Bring small U.S. bills for tips and smaller purchases.
Inspect any change you receive and clarify the currency before paying.
A credit card is useful for larger purchases, but having some cash makes island travel much easier.
Look for locally made or island-inspired souvenirs rather than grabbing the first thing you see at the pier.
Some fun finds include:
Honduran coffee • Local chocolate • Rum cake • Handmade crafts • Wood carvings • Artwork • Jewelry • Roatán souvenirs
Buying directly from local artisans and businesses is also a nice way to put more of your tourism dollars into the community.
Roatán is a major tourism destination, but visitors should still use the same good judgment they would in any unfamiliar port.
As of August 2026, the U.S. Department of State lists Honduras at Level 3: Reconsider Travel due to crime. It specifically notes that resort areas of the Bay Islands—including Roatán—have a greater concentration of resources and are better policed than some other parts of Honduras.
For a cruise port day:
Stay in established tourism areas.
Don't wander into unfamiliar neighborhoods just because they're close to the cruise terminal.
Use reputable transportation.
Book through your cruise line, your travel advisor or a well-established tour provider.
Agree on taxi pricing beforehand.
Know whether the quoted price is per person or for the entire vehicle.
Keep valuables discreet.
Leave expensive jewelry aboard and don't flash large amounts of cash.
Keep your phone secure.
Especially in crowded areas, markets and transportation hubs.
Don't leave bags unattended on the beach.
Watch the clock.
Roatán is beautiful—but your cruise ship will not wait for independent travelers who return late.
✓ Get away from the immediate port area if you want to truly experience Roatán.
✓ Try at least one local Honduran dish.
✓ Bring small bills for purchases and tips.
✓ Wear reef-friendly sun protection and protective clothing.
✓ Bring water shoes if your excursion calls for them.
✓ Use insect repellent, especially for jungle, mangrove or wildlife excursions.
✓ Protect the coral reef.
✓ Confirm your meeting point and return time before leaving the port.
✓ Give yourself plenty of extra travel time coming back to the ship.
✓ Ask before photographing local people.
✗ Touch, stand on or take coral.
✗ Feed or handle wildlife unless instructed by a legitimate facility.
✗ Carry your passport around unnecessarily unless your cruise line specifically instructs you to.
✗ Flash cash, jewelry or expensive electronics.
✗ Assume every taxi or tour operator outside the port is affiliated with your cruise line.
✗ Wait until the last possible minute to return to the pier.
✗ Confuse Port of Roatán/Coxen Hole with Mahogany Bay/Isla Tropicale when arranging transportation.
For most Roatán excursions, pack light:
Ship card • Photo ID if required • Cash/small bills • Credit card • Sunscreen • Sunglasses • Hat • Water • Swimsuit • Cover-up • Towel if needed • Water shoes • Insect repellent • Waterproof phone pouch • Portable charger
If you're snorkeling, a rash guard is a great addition.

Roatán may feel Caribbean, but remember—you are visiting Honduras.
The island has a unique cultural mix influenced by mainland Honduras, Afro-Caribbean and Garifuna heritage, English-speaking Bay Islanders and generations of people whose lives have been tied to the sea.
English is widely encountered in tourism areas, while Spanish is the official language of Honduras.
Even a simple:
Hola – Hello
Buenos días – Good morning
Gracias – Thank you
Por favor – Please
…is always nice to use while you're visiting.
Roatán's reef isn't just beautiful—it's part of an incredibly important marine ecosystem.
The Mesoamerican Reef provides habitat for marine species and helps protect Caribbean coastlines.
While visiting:
Take pictures, not coral.
Leave shells and marine life where you find them.
Never stand on the reef.
Avoid littering.
Support responsible tour operators.
We want this incredible destination to be just as beautiful for the people who live here—and for everyone who visits after us.
Don't judge Roatán by the cruise pier alone.
This is one port where I recommend getting out and experiencing the island. Whether that means snorkeling one of the world's great reef systems, meeting a sloth, flying through the jungle, tasting local chocolate and rum, or simply floating in the turquoise water at West Bay Beach—make this an adventure day.
For first-time visitors, one of my favorite combinations is:
🦥 Sloths + 🍫 Chocolate/Rum + 🌴 Island Sightseeing + 🏖️ West Bay Beach
You get a little wildlife, culture, scenery, local flavor and beach time all in one unforgettable port day.
Welcome to Roatán—get ready to fall in love with island life. 💙🌴
