Legal or Symbolic?
Whether You’re Making It Official or Simply Celebrating Your Love, Choose the Ceremony That’s Perfect for Your Story.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers both legal and symbolic wedding ceremonies, with requirements depending on the ship, itinerary, and ceremony location.

Legal Weddings at Sea

Norwegian’s Legal at Sea Wedding allows eligible couples to be legally married onboard on select ships and itineraries. The ceremony is conducted by the ship’s Captain and must be booked at least 75 days in advance.

Marriage-license requirements, documentation, processing procedures, and additional licensing fees apply and can vary depending on the sailing. Assistance with the marriage-license process is provided as part of the wedding arrangements.

Symbolic Weddings at Sea

For couples who want the experience of exchanging vows at sea without creating a new legal marriage, Norwegian offers a Symbolic at Sea Wedding. The ceremony is conducted by one of the ship’s Senior Officers and includes many of the traditional elements of a wedding ceremony without the marriage-license requirements of a legal wedding.

Symbolic ceremonies are a great option for couples who have already completed their legal marriage at home, prefer to avoid additional licensing requirements, or simply want to celebrate their commitment while sailing together.

Good to Know: Legal wedding availability and requirements depend on the ship and itinerary, while destination and harborside ceremonies may be subject to the marriage laws and licensing requirements of the location where the ceremony takes place. Current eligibility, documentation, fees, and ceremony requirements will be confirmed during the planning process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before Saying “I Do” at Sea

Planning a wedding or romantic celebration at sea works a little differently than planning one on land. From booking your cruise and choosing your ceremony to bringing guests onboard and handling marriage requirements, here are answers to some of the most common questions about celebrating with Norwegian Cruise Line.

Can I legally get married aboard a Norwegian cruise ship?

Yes. Norwegian offers a Legal at Sea Wedding aboard select ships and eligible itineraries.

The ceremony is conducted by the ship’s Captain, and marriage-license requirements, documentation, processing procedures, and additional licensing fees apply.

Legal at Sea Weddings must be booked at least 75 days in advance, and availability depends on the ship and itinerary.

What is the difference between a Legal at Sea and Symbolic at Sea Wedding?

A Legal at Sea Wedding creates a legally recognized marriage and requires the appropriate marriage license, documentation, and applicable fees.

A Symbolic at Sea Wedding gives you the experience of exchanging vows aboard the ship without creating a new legal marriage. The ceremony is conducted by one of the ship’s Senior Officers and does not require the marriage-license process associated with a legal wedding.

Symbolic ceremonies can be a great option for couples who complete their legal marriage at home but still want their wedding celebration at sea.

Do we need to book our Norwegian cruise before booking the wedding?

Yes. Your Norwegian cruise reservation must be secured before the wedding itself can be booked.

Once your cruise is booked and wedding-date availability has been confirmed, you can move forward with the wedding booking and payment process.

How far in advance should we start planning?

Earlier is always better—especially when you’re coordinating both a wedding and a cruise.

Wedding arrangements generally require at least 60 days of advance planning, while Norwegian’s Legal at Sea Wedding requires at least 75 days.

Starting earlier gives you more time to choose your ship and itinerary, secure staterooms for your guests, explore ceremony and reception options, and coordinate everyone’s travel arrangements.

Do we have to sail on the cruise?

Yes. Couples having an onboard Norwegian wedding must be booked and sailing on the cruise.

That’s part of what makes a cruise wedding so special—the ceremony is only the beginning, and your wedding can flow right into your honeymoon or vacation at sea.

Can we get married before the ship leaves port?

Yes. Norwegian’s Harborside Ceremony takes place onboard on embarkation day before the ship sails.

Harborside ceremonies are available on eligible cruises scheduled to depart at 4:00 PM or later and allow both sailing and approved non-sailing guests to attend.

Can people attend our wedding without taking the cruise?

Yes. Norwegian’s Harborside Ceremony allows non-sailing guests to attend the ceremony and reception before the ship departs.

Up to 50 non-sailing guests may attend. If more than 10 non-sailing guests are attending the ceremony, a reception is required.

Non-sailing guests must also meet Norwegian and wedding-program security and identification requirements.

What information is required for non-sailing guests?

Wedding organizers require information for non-sailing guests in advance for security and boarding purposes.

This includes each guest’s full name, date of birth, and driver’s-license or passport information, which must be provided at least 60 days before the wedding.

Guests must bring the same valid photo identification with them when boarding the ship.

Can we have a religious ceremony or bring our own officiant?

Standard ceremonies are generally civil or non-denominational. Religious ceremonies may be available at certain ports upon request and are subject to availability.

Couples may also be able to bring their own officiant. Depending on the ceremony and legal requirements, the wedding program may still provide a backup officiant.

Specific officiant requirements will be confirmed based on your ceremony location and wedding arrangements.

Can we get married at one of the destinations on our itinerary?

Yes. Norwegian offers Destination Weddings at select ports, allowing couples to exchange vows ashore during their cruise.

Available ceremony locations, transportation, legal requirements, licensing procedures, photography, and pricing vary by destination.

Some destination ceremonies may be legal while others may be symbolic depending on the location and arrangements.

Who handles the marriage license?

Marriage-license requirements depend on where your ceremony takes place.

For ceremonies requiring a marriage license, couples are responsible for providing the necessary documentation and completing the applicable legal requirements. The wedding team assists couples with navigating the marriage-license process when applicable.

Requirements, processing times, documentation, and licensing fees vary by ceremony type and destination.

Do we pay a deposit for the wedding?

The wedding package itself is generally paid in full to secure your wedding date rather than reserved with a traditional deposit.

Additional enhancements—such as reception arrangements and other wedding extras—may be selected and paid for separately according to the wedding program’s applicable deadlines and policies.

Is a wedding cake included?

Yes. Norwegian’s primary wedding packages include a 6-inch wedding cake for the couple.

Additional cake arrangements may be available when celebrating with a larger group. Current cake options, sizes, flavors, designs, and pricing will be confirmed during planning.

Are flowers included with Norwegian wedding packages?

Yes. Norwegian wedding packages include select floral elements depending on the ceremony chosen.

These may include a bridal bouquet and matching boutonniere. Additional or customized floral arrangements may also be available for an added cost.

Flower varieties, colors, arrangements, and customization are subject to seasonal, destination, and ship availability.

Is wedding photography included?

Photography inclusions vary by wedding package and ceremony location.

Some packages include professional photography time, a professional portrait, or both. Photography may not be included at every Destination Wedding location.

Additional photography time, prints, digital images, and other photography products may be available for purchase.

Can we have a reception after the ceremony?

Yes. Depending on your ship, sailing, guest count, and wedding arrangements, reception options may be available following your ceremony.

Your celebration may include hors d’oeuvres, dining, beverages, wedding cake, a champagne toast, photography, music, entertainment, and other enhancements based on the options available for your sailing.

For Harborside Weddings, a reception is required when more than 10 non-sailing guests attend.

Can we customize our Norwegian wedding?

Absolutely. Your Norwegian wedding package gives you the foundation for the celebration, and available enhancements can help make it feel completely your own.

Depending on your ship and arrangements, customization may include florals, photography, food and beverage service, reception arrangements, cakes, music, entertainment, and other special touches.

Availability and current pricing will be confirmed during the wedding-planning process.

Can guests bring wedding gifts onboard?

Wedding gifts should not be brought aboard by non-sailing wedding guests because of customs and security regulations.

If you’re inviting guests to an embarkation-day wedding, it’s best to arrange for gifts to be sent elsewhere or exchanged before or after the shipboard celebration.

Does Norwegian offer vow renewals?

Yes. Norwegian offers a Private Vow Renewal for couples who want to say “I do” all over again.

The ceremony is symbolic, so no new marriage license or legal paperwork is required. Vow renewals cannot be held on embarkation day, and the ceremony date, time, and onboard location are determined based on officer availability and operational requirements.

Does Norwegian offer honeymoon, anniversary, and romance packages?

Yes. You don’t have to get married onboard to make your Norwegian sailing part of your celebration.

Norwegian offers romance and celebration options including Taste of Love, Lovers Delight, Indulge in Romance, Private Vow Renewal, Just Married, and Happy Anniversary experiences.

Depending on the package, your celebration may include specialty dining, sparkling wine, chocolate-covered strawberries, spa treatments, breakfast in bed, stateroom surprises, photography, and other romantic touches.

Can we turn our wedding into a group cruise?

Absolutely. One of the biggest advantages of a cruise wedding is having the opportunity to turn one special day into an entire vacation with the people you love.

Depending on your group and sailing, we can explore stateroom arrangements, group dining, onboard gatherings, shore excursions, and other experiences that allow everyone to celebrate together while still enjoying their own vacation.

Who handles the wedding and who handles our cruise?

This is where the two sides of your celebration come together.

DreamCrafters Travels LLC helps you with the cruise and travel side—choosing the right Norwegian ship and itinerary, selecting staterooms, coordinating guest cruise reservations, helping with group travel, and keeping the vacation side of your celebration organized.

Norwegian’s designated wedding team and wedding service providers handle the wedding side—including ceremony availability, wedding-package arrangements, legal requirements, officiants, ceremony logistics, and wedding-specific enhancements.

I’ll help you understand how those pieces fit together so you don’t have to navigate the cruise and wedding sides on your own.
